About the artist and the project

Stefan Schaffeld is a Dutch visual artist, based in Switzerland and Germany, who explores the human conditions and sensibilities in space and time as immanent questions. He interrogates his subject matters mostly in drawing and painting.

This site is dedicated to his project in context of Difference and Identity, derived from the philosophical conceptions of Gilles Deleuze as described in his book Difference and Repetition.

One key aspect is the exploration of the notion of an unbiased ground that is not subordinated to ideas of representation. The ground itself is undifferentiated and a difference in itself. Through an open mind, exploratory shapes and forms become visually as equal and not representational.

Other aspects are relating to the rhizome structure as explored by Gilles Deleuze and Fèlix Guattari in Anti-Oedipus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia.

Any possible meaning derived from the illusionary perception of his drawings, either as figures or ‘realistic’ objects, are a mere coincidence. Nevertheless, a question not answered, how our learned patterns and attitudes are dictating or restricting our approach towards undifferentiated possibilities. One own’s experience and skills might oppose a free expression of difference. And even might impose pre-conceived ideas into representational forms.

This project questions through an exploratory drawing approach a potential notion of unmediated conceptions and responses.

Rhizome

The work in this sub-project are related to the context of mutliplicities as non-hierarchical structures as explored by Gilles Deleuze and Fèlix Guattari in their book Anti-Oedipus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia. Through drawing in lines I will explore various rhizome structures as an actualization of becoming and as an expression of difference. Drawn lines covering the surface […]
